The Company

Kirkcudbright is one of the busiest fishing ports for landings of King and Queen Scallops in the United Kingdom.

There are ten fishing vessels, five of which are owned by the company, fishing for Queen Scallops (Chlamys opercularis) and King Scallops (Pecten maximus) on a daily basis.

The town of Kirkcudbright and its tidal harbour are situated on the River Dee near the head of Kirkcudbright Bay, a long inlet that runs up from the Solway Firth.

Downstream from the harbour, pleasure boats and yachts tie up at the new marina with its superb floating pontoon.

In medieval times the harbour was one of the most important Scottish ports. John Paul Jones, the founder of the American Navy, landed in Kirkcudbright bay with the intention of kidnapping the Earl of Selkirk.

At present we operate three refrigerated vehicles all capable of carrying fresh and frozen products. The raw product is collected from ports all around Scotland, and the UK, as far north as Wick and as southerly as Newlyn. Our own transport vehicles are used across our distribution chain, meaning that we can ensure the highest standards of transport possible. Product is also delivered to Glasgow depots for onward shipping to Europe.

Today’s technology in the fishing and processing industry provides the maximum yield from the world’s most famous Scottish scallops.

Our Queen Scallops are mainly fished in the Irish Sea and off the South Coast of Scotland. They are caught by vessels using either the dredge or trawl net method of fishing.

Our King Scallops are caught all around the UK on a seasonal basis. Crews range from 5-8 per vessel depending on the size of the boat. All our vessels are equipped with refrigeration systems and ice plants to ensure high quality and utmost freshness.
